World, Latvia, Maurice de Saxe, sometime Duke of Courland, 56 mm white metal medal 1750, on his death.

Maurice de Saxe was an illegitimate son of Augustus "the Strong", King of Poland and Duke of Saxony. He served with distinction in various European armies, and ruled as Duke of Courland in 1726-1727, but after refusing the hand in marriage of the future Tsarina Anna of Russia, was deposed by her. Although never to regain his temporal authority, he continued his military career, and under Louis XV had such notable succeses that he was awarded the Château de Chambord for the rest of his life. The reverse of this medal shows his elaborate funerary monument in Strasbourg, where he was buried due to his Protestant faith.

EF, lustrous, minor marks.
