World, Ireland, Mary, silver shilling 1553, fantasy restrike by Emery circa 1840s

Emery's pieces are notorious, and fooled some Victorian collectors, although as the style is so far removed from the originals in most cases that it is difficult to understand how. Nevertheless the dies were prepared with great skill. It is interesting to think that the pre-Raphelite movement was beginning at the same time that these pieces were first offered for sale.
