World, France, Louis XVIII, entry into Paris, 3 May 1814, gold medal, dedicated on edge, "Donne a Sr Ouent le 4 Mai 1814". 12 mm, 2.08 g.
These medals were made with extraordinary haste by Denon and Gayrard on the entry of Louis XVIII to Paris; work was commenced the day before his arrival, and they were struck the night before, so that he could throw them as a largesse into the crowds lining the streets of Paris. The pieces thrown were made of bronze and silver, and 4000 examples were struck, of which relatively few seem to survive. It appears that the gold pieces were reserved, perhaps for presentation to those who received an audience with the King in the following days. Research of the dedication would be worthwhile.
VF, a few marks. Very rare.
