Roman Republican, Roman Republic, L. Titurius L.f. Sabinus, AR denarius 89 BC, King Tatius/abduction of the Sabine women. 17 mm, 3.89 g.

The obverse of this coinage shows Tatius, King of the Sabines, who also was supposed to have ruled Rome in the mid-8th century BC, alongside Romulus, for a period of five years. The reverse shows the infamous abduction of the Sabine women by Romulus and his followers which preceded the co-rule of Tatius; according to legend, the Sabine women pleaded their compatriots not to fight the Romans, leading to the merger of the two kingdoms.

VF, toned, ancient test cuts on edge, a few marks, reverse off-centre, lovely old tone.

ex-Robert William Hubel (1891-1944) collection, reportedly assembled from 1929 to 1939 in Detroit, Michigan.
