Roman Provincial, Seleucis and Pieria, Emesa, Antoninus Pius, AE23, the baetyl El-Gabal. His laureate bust right/eagle sitting on the Baetyl of El-Gabal, control mark Γ to right. 23 mm, 10.1 g

In Emesa, a meteorite of great antiquity was worshipped as a deity, the baetyl El-Gabal. By the Roman period, the traditional cult had been syncretised with that of Zeus, hence the prominent depiction of eagles in association with the baetyl. The priesthood of El-Gabal was royal in nature and the empress of Julia Domna was born into their lineage; Elagabalus was priest of the cult in his childhood, hence his name. The attempted introduction of El-Gabal as the primary deity of the Roman Empire during the reign of Elagabalus was not succesful.
