Roman Imperial, Pertinax, AE dupondius, Rome, 193 AD, his radiate, bearded bust right/Providentia, standing left, reaching for a star. 25 mm, 13.0 g. 


The reverse type of this coinage, suitable for this noblest of emperors, shows Providentia, the personification of providence or foresight, reaching for a star, as if to say that the destiny of humanity is eternal and unlimited. cf. Aeneid IX, l. 641, "...sic itur ad astra"....

about VF, areas of roughness on the reverse. Very rare and important, one of the better examples available, superior to the Mazzini coin,
