Greek, Mysia, Pergamon, Q. Caecilius Metullus Pius Scipio, AR tetradrachm c. 49/8 BC. Cistophoric standard. Snake emerges from cista mystica, in garland of flowers and fruit/two serpents entwined around legionary standard. 11.9 g.

Q. Caecilius Metullus Pius Scipio (95-45 BC) issued this coin as proconsul of Syria; at the time he was one of the political leaders of the anti-Caesarian party. He was also a moneyer in 47-46 BC under Pompey. He comitted suicide in 45 BC rather than to be captured by Publius Sittius, his last words being the notoriously stoic "Imperator se bene habet" ("all is well the general"). Despite this calmness in face of death, Scipio is recorded as being a violent man, famous for his greed and tyranny, among other immoral behaviour.

about EF, struck from worn dies as usual, light deposit, a few marks, residually lustrous. Rare, especially so nice.
