Greek, Laconia, Sparta, AE tetrachalkon c. 40-30 BC, Lakedaimon (a personification of the Spartan capital) facing right/Eagle, ethnic and controls across. 6.78  g.

By the time of this issue, Sparta no longer had reigning kings or powerful armies, and the ancient traditions of the city which had set it apart earlier in its history were little but archaic curiosities, attracting Roman tourists. Nevertheless, the city was important enough within the Roman Empire to be given its own coinage, in suitably austere style.
