Greek, Laconia, Sparta, AE tetrachalkon c. 40-30 BC, Lakedaimon (a personification of the Spartan capital)/Eagle, ethnic and control mark T I across. 5.85 g.
By the time of this issue, Sparta no longer had reigning kings or powerful armies, and the ancient traditions of the city which had set it apart earlier in its history were little but archaic curiosities. Nevertheless, the city was important enough within the Roman Empire to be given its own coinage, in suitably austere style.
about VF, slightly off-centre, dark patina with areas of stable green corrosion. Very rare with this control mark.
