Greek, Ionia, Smyrna, AE20 c. 75-50 BC, Apollo in wreath, Homer seated left. 20 mm, 9.56 g.

The poet Homer, who perhaps lived in the 8th century BC, is supposed to have been a resident of the banks of the Meles river, near Smyrna. The coinage of the city therefore commemorates him, and although not particularly common, are by far the most prevalent ancient types depciting the poet.

According to the geographer Strabo (Geographica xiv, i.37), Smyrna had bronze coins known as "Homerum", presumably of this type.
