Greek, Attica, Athens, silver tetradrachm c. 454-440 BC. Transitional type. Athena/Owl. 17.16 g.


Sometimes dated as early as 460 BC, this coinage is chronologically situated between Starr Group V.B and the mass coinage. The obverse is characterised by a frontal eye, and the reverse has perhaps the most realistic owl to be featured on ancient Greek coinage.

about EF, old cabinet tone. Rare, and with an exceptionally fine style reverse.
