Greek, Attica, Athens. c. 455-440 BC. AR tetradrachm, transitional issue. Head of Athena right, wearing Attica helmet decorated with olive leaves and spiral palmette/ Owl, standing right with head facing, olive-twig and crescent in upper left field. 24 mm, 16.62 g.
This coinage was struck immediately before the "mass coinage" tetradrachms (Kroll 8). The style differs; Athena still has an archaic smile, and the owl is more lifelike.
good VF, minor roughness, light tone. Rare transitional issue.
