British, Scotland, Edinburgh, George Drummond and the Royal Exchange, masonic medal 1753. His bust left, wearing a wig and a sash/coat of arms of the Grand Lodge of Scotland.
Drummond served as Lord Provost of Edinburgh on many occasions, and was the Grandmaster of the Grand Lodge of Scotland from 1752-3. In this role, he laid the foundation stone of the Royal Exchange on 13 September 1753. The building exists today as the Edinburgh City Chambers, and is used for the meeting of the city's council. This and a companion silver medal with an allegorical depiction of the interior of a masonic lodge are generally considered the earliest Scottish masonic medals.
VF, with original fitting at 12h, even brown tone. Extremely rare and important; even the great Shackles collection of masonic medals only had an electrotype; absent from the British Museum collection as published; in the Hunterian collection only in silver.
See Baldwin's of St. James, Auction 37, lot 461 for another example; also cf. MI 671/382 (Hunterian museum, silver); Shackles col. 97 (electrotype)
