British medals, Charles II, restoration 1660, AE medal by Thomas Simon. Moses in Egypt, watching as the Israelites are forced to make bricks without straw (Exodus 5:1-21)/8 line inscription in laurel wreath, signed T below. 31 mm.
The obverse design gives a rather forced exercise in typology; the British are supposed to have suffered under the Commonwealth as the Israelites did under Pharoah in Egypt, while Charles II is a new Moses who will liberate them.
VF, surface marks, deposit. Very rare, especially in bronze.
