British hammered, Scotland, David II, AR groat, second coinage, c. 1357-67, class A7/B mule, Edinburgh mint. 3.96 g. ]

Although the worn obverse die somewhat obscures the portrait, during the class A coinage, it was used both at Edinburgh and Aberdeen. Therefore, to strike this coin of class B, it must have been returned from Aberdeen ! The Edinburgh moneyers do not seem to have got much more use of it as very few of these coins survive.

VF, struck from a worn obverse die, a few minor marks. Extremely rare and with an excellent provenance.

Spink 5091; Burns 16, fig. 255 (obverse, this die)/15a, fig. 262B (reverse, this die)

ex-R.C. Lockett collection, part I, Glendining's 18-19 June 1957, lot 130 pt.
