British hammered, Scotland, Alexander II, silver penny, phase B, c. 1220-30 AD, Walter and Ehu, moneyers (?) at Edinburgh or Perth mint. Reverse reads VVATER EH. 19 mm, 1.47 g.
According to Burns, the posthumous coinage of William I, struck under Alexander II, giving the moneyers Walter E[h][u] are simply blundered coins of the Hue and Walter series. However Jones and Sugden have convincingly argued that given the existence of nine dies with such readings, and their consistency in placing the names in the opposite order to those of the Hue Walter series, these coins form a different series. It seems likely that Eh is a short from of the name of a second moneyer, who struck with Walter, but it could also possibly be an abbreviation for Edinburgh.
VF+, struck from worn dies, old tone. Extremely rare.
Spink 5029 (as William I); Jones & Sugden 4/F (these dies)
