British hammered, Normandy, William I "the Conqueror", silver denier c. 1083-7 AD, PAX type. Stylised church, pellet in centre/patriarchal cross, two pellets below, legend NORMANNIA or similar. 0.90 g.

William I was Duke of Normany before his accession to the English throne, and the possesion stayed within the dynasty. Coins were struck anonymously during William's reign and those of his sucessors. They circulated widely and examples have been found in Britain and Ireland as well as modern-day France and other parts of continental Europe. This PAX issue is considered by Legros to have been struck between 1083 and 1087, contemporary to the PAXS pennies struck in England.

VF, dark tone. Very rare.

Legros 335; Dumas Group C, pl. XX, 23
