British hammered, Normandy, Robert II Courtheuse (son of William I), silver denier, c. 1083-1106. Rouen mint. 0.99 g.
Robert was the first son of William the Conqueror, but was given the supposedly more valuable possesion of the Duchy of Normandy rather than inheriting the Kingdom. As well as being an important participant in the First Crusade, he was a pretender to the throne of England, attempting to seize it in 1088, until he was overthrown in Normandy by his brother Henry I of England, and he spent the rest of his long life in captivity, firstly in Devizes, and then in Cardiff, dying in 1134.
VF+, toned, weakly struck on an irregular flan as usual. Rare.
