British hammered, East Anglia, St. Edmund the Martyr, silver penny, c. 862-9, Eadberht moneyer. 1.07 g.
St. Edmund, king of East Anglia, was killed by Viking invaders, either during battle, or immediately after it, in 870 AD. He was venerated as a martyr from the early 10th century. His relics, originally at the eponymous Bury St Edmunds, are conserved now in Toulouse and Arundel.
EF, lustrous, deposit, chipped, cracked. Rare, and unusually nice despite the damage.
