World, Netherlands, Haarlem, 400th anniversary of printing, silver medal 1823, 36 mm. By de Vries & Sons. Monument/commemorative legend in 12 lines.

Although nowdays no-one really doubts that Johannes Guttenberg was the inventor of the movable-type printing press, in the Netherlands it was believed from the 16th century that the honour was actually due to Laurens Koster (c. 1370-1439 or 1440) of Haarlem, who was supposed to have invented the printing press in 1423. It seems unlikely that this is the case, principally because no book printed by Koster survives. Nevertheless, Haarlem has long commemorated Koster, including with this medal.

EF+, almost as struck, lustrous, attractively toned.
