World, Nazi Germany, silver medal 1936, millenium of Henry I of Saxony (876-936), by Karl Goetz. 36 mm, 19.8 g.

Although seemingly issued on an innocuous historical theme, this medal in fact relates to an obscure aspect of Nazi ideology. Henry was the founder of the Ottonian line, and hence in some ways the first German king; to Nazi ideologues he represented the founder of the "First Reich" to which the fascist state was supposedly a sucessor. The anniversary of Henry I's death was celebrated annually during the Nazi period by a ceremony at the Quedlinburg Abbey, the location of Henry I's tomb, attended by Himmler and other senior officials.
