Roman provincial, Egypt, Alexandria, Severus Alexander as Caesar, BI tetradrachm, dated regnal year 5 of Elagabalus, c. 221-2 AD, Ares standing left. 23 mm, 13.31 g.

By 221 AD, Elagabalus and his mother Julia Soaemias were at political risk from traditionalists in Rome who opposed his religious reforms and licentious behaviour. In order to pacify them, his grandmother Julia Maesa arranged for Severus Alexander, her grandson by Julia Mamaea, to be appointed as Caesar. As he became emperor in the following year, with the overthrowal and murder of Elagabalus, his coinage as Caesar is rather scarce from all mints.

VF, even tone. Rare.
