Roman Imperial, Laelianus, AE antoninianus, Moguntiacum (Mainz) mint, c. February to June 269 AD. Victory advancing right with wreath and palm branch. 2.46 g.

Laelianus was probably the governor of Germania Superior at the time of his revolt against Postumus, who was recognised as emperor in Gaul, Hispania and Britain. According to the late Historia Augusta he was a brave soldier who had sucessfully defended the Roman frontier against Germanic incursions. Although Postumus crushed the revolt, apparently without much difficulty, he was murdered by his own soldiers when he refused to allow them to sack Moguntiacum in the wake of their victory. They then made one of their number, Marius, supposedly once a blacksmith, emperor, and proceeded to sack the city.

about EF, some original silvering, minor roughness, superbly well struck reverse. Rare.
