Roman Republican, Julius Caesar, fourrée denarius c. 48-47 BC, uncertain military mint in North Africa, Venus/Aeneas carrying Anchises out of the ruins of Troy.

This coin is struck on a silver-plated, base metal planchet. Often such irregular coins are contemporary forgeries; in this case, due to the fine style, and thick plating, it is possibly an official coin of Caesar, struck in this manner due to silver shortage at the military mint, and the pressing need to pay troops.

about VF, plating largely intact, banker's marks, including one revealing core, the reverse struck off centre.

cf. Crawford 458/1
