RIC 55

ex-Rudolf Hoesch (1904-1990) collection; ex-Apostolo Zeno (1668-1750) collection, Dorotheum (Vienna) auction, 6 July 1955, lot 161

Apostolo Zeno was a Venetian poet of some distinction, who wrote the libretti for 36 operas. His coin collection, including great rarities, was one of the only important ones not to be either dispersed before the age of photography, or acquired by an institution, being instead passed down through the family until it was sold at auction in 1955.
