Greek, Judaea, Jewish War, silver shekel, year 3 = 68-69 AD, chalice with ornate rim, "Shekel of Israel" around, above "Year 3"/pomegranate branch (the ornamented staff of the High Priest), legend "Jerusalem the Holy". 14.15 g.

This extraordinary coinage was struck during the Jewish revolt against Roman rule which lasted from 66 to 70 AD. Both designs relate to sacral objects from the Temple in Jerusalem, the obverse showing a ritual vessel, the reverse three pomegranate buds, which adorned the High Priest's ceremonial staff.

EF+, lustrous, some minor horn silver, otherwise much as made. Rare.
