Greek, Attica, Athens, AR obol, c. 454-404 BC, contemporary imitation. 7 mm, 0.55 g.

This coin appears to be the obol of the same issue as the curious diobol in the same types (see e.g. CNG e577, lot 87), alongside several examples of which this coin was sold in 1968. This particular imitative coinage, presumably from Asia Minor or elsewhere in the Near East, is immediately recognisable by the form of the owl, with large eyes and a thin neck, which is quite unlike the official coinage of Athens.

Fine or better, chipped, rough surfaces. Extremely rare.

cf. Kroll 13, for the official issue.

ex-Associated Arts List (March 1968), no. 12 pt.
