British medals, George III, anti-Republican medal, c. 1795 by W. Whitley. 49 mm, white metal.

A decapitated French aristocrat points to his own severed head, a devil behind him, surrounded by a circle of decapitated heads/domestic scene: a man drinks with two infant children in his lap, a woman spins while an older child looks on, above the Crown.

This medal was issued as a protest against the Reign of Terror (1793-4) during the French Revolution, and mocks the Enlightenment philosophy the French revolutionaries adhered to; in contrast, traditional English conservatism is seen to lead to peace and tranquility.

EF, minor marks and deposits, lustrous. Scarce.

BHM 407, Eimer 869
