Earl Granville, who was usually known as "Lord Carteret" was a Whig politican who held various senior governmental roles, including serving as Lord President of the Council between 1751 and his death. He was reputedly a most educated man and his early political career was aided by his ability to speak German, allowing himself to converse with George I, who had little English.
